Bridging Classical & Contemporary
Colin Payne is a contemporary artist and software engineer exploring the intersection of traditional technique and digital innovation through painting, drawing, and interdisciplinary practice.
About the Work
My paintings exist in the space between representation and abstraction—portraits that refuse to sit still. Drawing from Sargent's technical virtuosity, Johns' symbolic layering, and the emotional rawness of contemporary portraiture, I build surfaces that reward close looking and resist easy interpretation.
Each work is an accumulation: gestural marks, scraped surfaces, translucent veils of color, and deliberate disruptions. Red tape crosses faces. Forms emerge and dissolve. The classical portrait becomes a site for exploring restriction, visibility, and what lies beneath polished surfaces.
Since 2022, this practice has found audiences in juried exhibitions and gallery spaces throughout Michigan and New York, with work that challenges viewers to look past the obvious and sit with ambiguity.
